Thought of the Week

It is vital to remind ourselves, from time to time, of two complementary sides of the one coin of our experience. On one side is the realm of what’s so: the facts, the objectively real, that which is publicly and measurably true. Let’s call this side of reality our day experience. We talk or write about it using day language – that is, normal everyday discourse. The other side of our experiential coin I call night experience. It is communicated through night language, by way of grand metaphors, poetry, and vibrant images. Our attention is focused on What does it mean? This side of our experience is subjectively real, like a nighttime dream, though not objectively real. Night language is personally or culturally meaningful. It nourishes us with spectacular images of emotional truth.

Belief PDF Print E-mail

Belief is a very individual thing. Yet within the United Church of Canada we endeavour to express our common beliefs in our statements of faith. Over the years the church has created various documents which expressed spiritual understanding within the context of a specific time. The New Creed was written in 1967 (Amended 1980 & 1994) and is used extensively today. It reflects positively our faith within the framework of Christianity. The Song of Faith, the latest expression of our beliefs, speaks of our understanding of the Holy within a poetic framework.

We believe the strongest and most valid aspect of creation is the power of love, exhibited in the nurturing aspect of all of life. This dynamic force, referred over the years as God, is the constant within our universe. We believe that the Christ is the spiritual power to bring healing, wholeness and new life to all aspects of creation. We believe the Christ is ever-present. We believe the teachings and example of Jesus, show us how to live out love in very human ways.

We believe all people are on a spiritual journey. The role of the church is to enable this journey and to allow every person to experience the wholeness and the love present in our world.
