Baptisms

The sacrament of Baptism is the single rite of initiation into the Christian community, the church.

A sacrament is a holy act, a visible sign of God’s invisible grace. It reminds us that God’s love surrounds us from the moment we’re born and continues through the course of our lives.

At Centennial we believe that the gift of God’s love doesn’t depend on our ability to understand it, so we baptize people as infants right up through adulthood. Baptism is not a requirement for God’s love, rather it is acelebration of that love.

Baptism takes place during a regular Sunday service. When children are baptized, their parents make promises before God and our congregation to raise them in the Christian faith. Adults seeking baptism make affirmations of their faith and promises themselves. Our congregation at Centennial also pledges to support those who are baptized as they live out their baptismal promises.

Here at Centennial, we know what a commitment it is to bring a child to church every Sunday, so we work hard to welcome families and help everyone to feel that they are part of our church family, as proclaimed in their baptism, in every way.

Baptism in the United Church is recognized by all denominations of the Christian church that practise infant baptism. Similarly, if people have already been baptized in another church, the United Church recognizes their baptism and welcomes them.
